The art scene in Iran is an ever changing environment, since the entry of cinema to Iran over a hundred years ago; Iranian moviemakers have thrived over the years from winning Oscars to taking part in many renowned international festivals.

Now a different kind of festival is taking place, called the Ammar Popular Film Festival. The Ammar Festival boasts of being a popular cinema, not making movies for art lovers rather for the general public and screening them for free. It has transformed the concept of watching festivals only in cinemas, rather reaching audiences in people’s homes and showing to audiences of 10 to 400 in mosques or schools.

Organizer of the Ammar Festival, Nader Talebzadeh, said “One of the features of the Ammar Film Festival is its ability to show its products to over 2,000 locations around Iran. The films are mainly focused on Islamic values, Islamic awakening and Iran’s Islamic revolution but cover other issues around the world too. The organizers say they’re using the language of art to make their message be heard. “It’s really the base for those who are really involved with the existence of the Islamic Revolution, those artists, filmmakers, documentarians, who basic train of thought is to pursue the growth and development of the Islamic republic with a language of art, It’s not a propaganda festival as some might think,” Talebzadeh also a Cinema director added.

The festival says it’s for the 99 percenters and for those usually not given a chance to get their work shown. “If, we look at media in Islamic countries, we see a minority is in control of all the media a minority will less religious values compared to the religious majority, The Ammar Festival is trying to make the majority that exist in Islamic countries to make use of modern methods, most importantly being Cinema,” Event Organizer, Vahid Jalili.

But for some young documentary makers this is a chance for their voice to be heard, and a start for them in the movie industry. “Ammar Festival is different from the other festivals in Iran, because it’s really easy to get in touch with. Like for people that it’s their first works and they are not very famous it’s really easy to get into the festival,” Journalist and Documentarian, Mostafa Afzalzadeh said. Many festivals are now taking place in Iran for various audiences and tastes.
